Fungi adaptogens are a unique group of fungi that have been used for centuries in traditional medicine, especially in eastern cultures. These fungi are known for their ability to help the body adapt to stress and restore balance, both physical and mental. Among the fungi thrive most popular are the reishi, cordyceps, the chaga, the mane of a lion, the agaricus blazei and physalis linteus.

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)

Ganoderma lucidum, known as lingzhi in China and reishi in Japan, he received the nickname of “the mushroom of immortality” and is one of the medicinal mushrooms traditional more venerable (1).

Normally exhibit a morphology similar to a hoof or a fan, and grows mainly in the trunks of living trees and dead. Its distribution encompasses Asia, parts of Europe, America and Africa, (2, 3).

Ganoderma lucidum has been used for over two millennia (4). Historical records, such as the Herbal Classic of Shennong, which dates from the first century a. C., and contemporary sources as the Pharmacopoeia of China, document the properties tranquilizers of the G. lucidum (5). This effect An-Shen has been used for centuries in the treatment of conditions such as restlessness, insomnia and palpitations (6).

Its application spans a broad spectrum of ailments, including chronic liver disease, hypertension, neurasthenia, insomnia, bronchitis, gastric ulcer, diabetes, and cancer (7). Due to its purported health benefits, and the alleged absence of adverse effects, Ganoderma has earned a distinguished reputation in eastern cultures such as herbal remedy for excellence (8).

Ganoderma lucidum contain approximately 400 biomolecules active (16), among which are the beta-glucans (polysaccharides) and triterpenoids as ergosterol (provitamin D2) and ganoderic acids. In addition, this mushroom is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and other bioactive substances.

It has been documented that the triterpenoid derived from Ganoderma lucidum (GL) exhibit a remarkable efficacy as adjunctive therapy, improving health and contributing to the treatment of various diseases, such as prostate cancer, inflammation, atherosclerosis, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases (11).

Recent findings have confirmed its effectiveness, demonstrating improvements in sleep patterns of patients with insomnia or other mental disorders (13,14).

Reishi has shown a remarkable potential antidepressant and anxiolytic because of its interaction with the 5-HT2A receptor, presenting favorable clinical results in the treatment of insomnia, restlessness and palpitations (15). In addition, reishi has shown the ability to regulate the production of interleukins, such as IL-6 and TNF-α-63, by linking its immunomodulatory function with its role adaptogenic.

In addition, several studies have elucidated the pharmacological activities of the extracts of Ganoderma lucidum on the nervous system and the disorders related to the central nervous system (17, 18).

Our ancestors have used mushrooms for thousands of years, and these have been an integral component of the medical practices in different cultures (1).

China is the birthplace of the micoterapia; there, medicinal mushrooms have been used since time immemorial. Were described, classified and organized formally in the first treaty of herbalism, the *Pen Tsao King*, written around the year 200. C. The pharmacopoeia of china includes 270 species of medicinal mushrooms, and the majority of its uses and therapeutic properties listed in the *Compendium of Materia medica* (*Pen Tsao Kang Mu*), 1575 (2).

Interestingly, the knowledge of the therapeutic virtues of fungi in the West probably dates back to a time as early as in China. Despite the knowledge relatively limited on the therapeutic properties of fungi in Europe, occasionally arise surprising findings that challenge the idea that fungi were ignored centuries ago (2).

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the action of the fungus is usually gradual: they act from the deeper layers to the surface levels of the *Qi* (vital energy), moving from systems of internal organs until the channels or meridians (3).

Despite this rich historical background, only in recent times modern science has rediscovered and confirmed the profound medicinal potential that harbor the fungus, thus validating the ancestral wisdom that for a long time, has been revered as powerful sources of therapeutic compounds (1).

The definition of adaptogen was first proposed by soviet scientists in the late 1950s; these described as any substance capable of influencing both sick individuals as healthy through the “fix” of dysfunction without causing unwanted side effects, thus laying the foundation for future investigations (1).

In the 1990s, scientists Hildebert Wagner, George Wikman and Alexander Panossian carried out in-depth studies on adaptogens, refining the concept. Defined adaptogens as biorreguladores natural that enhance the ability of the organism to adapt to environmental stressors and reduce the damage caused by these factors. It was observed that the adaptogens minimize the body's response to stress, decreasing the negative reactions during the phase of alarm and mitigating or delaying the onset of the phase of exhaustion associated with the general adaptation syndrome (2).

After more than fifty years of research, the definition of adaptogen has evolved. In 1998, the Food and Drug Administration of the united States (FDA) described adaptogens as a new type of metabolic regulator that facilitates the adaptation to the environment and helps to prevent external damage, marking a shift towards the use of the term “adaptogen” in a sense, functional (3)(4).

The adaptogenic properties are found primarily in plant and fungal-specific, being adaptogens of plant origin, the most common (5). Some mushrooms contain adaptogens that help the body adapt to stressors, both internal and external, by restoring balance and regulating various biological processes (6).

As the forest wake up from their winter lethargy and come back to life, a mushroom, in particular, emerges as the star of the season. Either by the transience of its short season, his earthy scent crackling in a pan with butter, or how their hats in the form of a honeycomb emerge from the ground of the woods, morels have a mystique of its own.

With its distinctive appearance, its nutty flavor and its extremely elusive, the morels keep you alert to the pickers, inspired chefs and excited to micófilos when you are lucky enough to find a plot.

In honor of the Month of the Morels, we celebrate with a quick guide about them. From tips for sorting and picking up his crop and fun facts about the fungus, here is all you need to know about these treasures fungal season.

Classification and identification of fungi, morels

Sometimes called “Mushroom Sponge”, the morels have a hat badge, ribbed and chopped that stands out in the nature. But do not be fooled by the nickname, are much better in a pan fregándolas. These mushrooms have many names, regional, such as “Fish Dry”, “Chickens Walnut”, “Merkels” and “Miracles”. Whatever you call them, the morels are still some of the wild mushrooms most sought after, prized for its rich flavor and excitement of searching for them. Remember: always should be cooked well before eating.

The morels are instantly recognizable by their hats with honeycomb, which have dimples and ridges deep that give them their characteristic texture. Its colour varies from golden yellow to dark brown or black, depending on the species and the environment.

Mushroom morilla with hat striatum, which is located in the forests.

The Latin binomial for one of the species of morels most common is Morchella esculenta . Morchella derived from the German morchel, which means fungus, while esculenta comes from Latin and means “edible” or “fit to eat”, a very appropriate name for this exquisite culinary.

Where to find morels

The morilla is an expert at evasion. These elusive fungi tend to emerge between April and may, and may appear only a few days in a certain place before disappearing.

How and where to find them? The morels tend to thrive in places with a unique and sometimes surprising, as apple orchards, abandoned, at the foot of elm trees dead or dying, around poplar, oak, and poplar trees live along the banks of the rivers, and even soils disturbed areas affected by forest fires.

A group of fungi, morels black that grow in a forest recently burned.

Natural disasters seem to be the conditions favourite of the morels for their growth. Mycologists still ask for their ability to thrive in environments such as arid, especially in the burned-out remains of forest fires. When the greater part of life is retracted, the morels re-emerged. In fact, after the massive fires in Yellowstone in 1988, the food gatherers reported one of the fructificaciones more abundant in recent history.

The book of Paul Stamets, ” Mushroom growing Gourmet and Medicinal” documents a series of events, legendary, in which the morels emerged in abundance unexpected after natural disturbances. This is one of many fascinating ideas that you will find on the morels and hundreds of other fungi fascinating throughout the book.

The life cycle of the fungus morilla

For the morilla, life is not a marathon, but a strategic race marked by periods of rapid growth followed by periods of patience underground. Their spores germinate quickly in mycelium, which can spread through the environment to an impressive speed of up to 10 cm per day. But this boom of underground activity is not infinite. When the mycelium is facing difficult terrain, lack of nutrients or environmental disturbances, changes direction. Instead of continuing to expand, it goes into conservation mode, forming a structure of survival strengthened known as esclerocio.

The sclerotia are as underground bunkers for the mushrooms: mass compact and rich in nutrients that allow the morels to take shelter and wait for the opportune moment to return. Invisible to the naked eye, these sturdy structures play a fundamental role in the cycle of life of the morels. When the conditions line up, such as after a forest fire or drastic changes in the soil, these sclerotia is activated, triggering the appearance of fruiting bodies on the surface.

A lonely morilla emerging from the soil of a forest covered in moss.

Different species are different types of sclerotia. For example, the morilla yellow (Morchella esculenta) is dense and similar to a walnut, while the morilla black (Morchella angusticeps) has a light texture and sandy. Often they are formed by thousands in just a cubic foot of earth. These formations underground can be discrete, but they are also a key factor for the morels to resist extreme environmental conditions and bear fruit unexpected at the right time.

How to grow mushrooms morels?

Can you grow morels? The short answer is yes but the long answer is a little more complicated. While morels grow rapidly in the nature, to recreate the same conditions in indoor or under control has been far more difficult.

It was not until 1982 that the controlled cultivation of morels experienced a big breakthrough. The merit is of the mycologist Ron Ower, who, thanks to an accident of laboratory and an ingenious experimentation, he made the morels fructificaran using a method of two phases, which involves the formation of sclerotia and the activation of environmental.

The process, patented in his time and now in the public domain, mimics nature by introducing a phase rich in nutrients followed by a phase poor in them, which makes the fungus settle in the sclerotia. With time, water, and suitable environmental conditions, fungi can emerge.

While the commercial cultivation remains a highly specialized activity, many home growers continue to experiment with techniques ranging from beds of ground up wood chips and plots controlled outdoor. With a little patience (and a lot of trial and error), the elusive morilla could repay your efforts.

The foreground of the cap of a mushroom Morel, showing its characteristic honeycomb structure.

Similar to the morels

To identify the true morels, is not only about luck, but of succeeding. While morels are a treasured find for cooking, they also have some imitations that can be harmful if consumed. These “false morels” they may seem similar at first glance, but may contain toxic compounds such as the monometilhidrazina, a chemical that is also found in rocket fuel. Its ingestion can have serious health consequences.

One of the easiest ways to know if you've found a morilla authentic is to open from top to bottom. A morilla authentic will be completely hollow on the inside, from the tip of the hat to the base of the stem. In contrast, the majority of the morels false have an interior cottony, with cameras or fill.

Even the gatherers experienced make mistakes, so if ever you're not sure: when in doubt, leave it out.

Examples of species similar to Morel:

False Morel ( Gyromitra esculenta )

Often wrinkled or lobed, not in the form of a honeycomb.

The lid tends to resemble a brain instead of having holes.

The interior usually is not hollow.

It can be deadly due to the giromitrina, a toxin that is metabolized in monometilhidrazina, a chemical that is also found in rocket fuel.

Morilla false (Gyromitra esculenta) with a hat in the shape of a brain.

Morilla fake large red ( Gyromitra caroliniana )

Large and red, with a hat bulky.

Stem thickness and interior fill.

Sometimes confused with the morels black of the beginning of the season.

Morilla false (early Verpa bohemica )

Have a hat crumpled attached only at the top of the stem (the morels real hats attached all along the stem).

The stem is usually cottony or fill.

Mushroom morilla false early (Verpa bohemica) hat with creased and stem pale.

Verpa conical spring (Morilla bell )

Hat small, bell-shaped and smooth or wrinkled.

The hat hangs freely from the stem (is not attached as the morels true).

Less commonly toxic, but it's still not recommended.

Whether you're watching your first hat of the season or keeping a secret so dear, to hunt morels is a matter of skill, luck, and always exciting. So celebrate the Month of the Morels as it should be done: put on your boots, don't lose sight of the forest and enjoy the moment. Happy collection!

Nearly 1 in 3 adults report feeling emotionally exhausted on a weekly basis. The emotional exhaustion can manifest itself in the daily lives, affecting our job performance, our connection with others and our motivation.

What is certain is that our state of mind can often be a sign of imbalances deeper in the body. Prolonged stress, lack of sleep, high levels of cortisol and low levels of serotonin can influence how we feel emotionally, mentally, and even physically.

Often we can improve our state of mind or, at least, to combat the emotional imbalance adapting life habits such as exercise, breathing, writing a journal and spend time in nature. But sometimes, even the more routines constants are sufficient.

This is where an approach of well-being more holistic approach can be useful. Certain fungi, herbs and natural compounds called adaptogens can help to combat the emotional imbalance and to promote a mood to a more positive by promoting the mental calm and help the body to relax.*

In this publication, we will explore the adaptogens and natural compounds that encourage the state of mind, stress reduction and mental energy. Also we include formulas with these ingredients to help you find the ideal supplement for your mood.*

What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are natural compounds, such as mushrooms, herbs, and roots, that help the body adapt to the stressors, physical, emotional, and environmental. For centuries, herbalists and healers have used adaptogens traditional as reishi, ashwagandha, and holy basil to promote the mind-body connection, and a state of mind in balance.*

When the body is better prepared to handle stress, is usually obtained a better emotional balance and general well-being. This is because, by supporting the body's response to stress and potentially influence neurotransmitters such as serotonin, adaptogens can help to create an internal environment more stable and a more solid basis for an emotional state more healthy.*

1. A native of the arid regions of India, the Middle East and some parts of Africa, ashwagandha is a small shrub with flowers of a yellowish green colour and a distinctive fruit orange-red. Used for over 3000 years in the practices of ayurvedic and traditional, it is valued for helping the body adapt to physical and emotional stress, at the same time that it promotes calmness, the vitality and the overall balance between mind and body.*

Today, ashwagandha is one of the adaptogens that are most studied for stress. Modern research continues to explore its role in the promotion of a good night's sleep, the maintenance of mental clarity and support to the body's natural ability to recover balance in difficult times. It is believed that its key compounds, known as withanolides, play a critical role in these effects adaptogénicos.*

Supplement with ashwagandha

Host Defense MycoBenefits™ Mood * uses ashwagandha along with other adaptogens that are beneficial for improving the mental energy, mood and mental calm.
